Curriculum and Instruction

What Do We Focus On?

Prioritizing the inclusion of African history, literature, and culture in the curriculum: One of the most important steps towards an African-centered education is to ensure that the curriculum includes a comprehensive and accurate history of Africa and its diaspora. This can include topics such as ancient African civilizations, the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and the African diaspora.

Incorporating culturally relevant teaching and learning strategies: Culturally relevant teaching and learning strategies are important for creating a positive and supportive learning environment for Black students. This can involve incorporating cultural practices and perspectives into teaching methods and materials, and creating opportunities for students to connect their learning to their own experiences and cultural backgrounds.

Creating safe and affirming learning environments: Black students should feel safe and affirmed in their learning environments, which requires addressing issues of discrimination, bias, and prejudice. This can involve implementing policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion, providing resources and support for students who experience discrimination, and creating opportunities for students to learn and celebrate their identities and cultures.

By prioritizing the inclusion of African history, literature, and culture in the curriculum, incorporating culturally relevant teaching and learning strategies, and creating safe and affirming learning environments, we model and develop students' ability to:

  • Think Critically

  • Build Community

  • Tap into Creativity and Imagination

  • Communicate

  • Collaborate
